Pool Calc vs LaMotte WaterLink

LaMotte makes the Spin Touch and ColorQ meters that many pool stores and pros use, and WaterLink Home is the app that pairs with them for home owners. WaterLink Solutions PRO is its sibling for commercial pros. Pool Calc doesn't pair with any meter. It takes readings from any kit you type in, works without an account, and adds client tools for pros.

The short answer

If you've invested in a LaMotte meter, WaterLink Home is the app that talks to it. If you test with anything else, or you look after more than five pools, Pool Calc gives you an ordered dose plan for your own products, a charted log, and pro tools on Plus or Pro, with no account.

The WaterLink apps are free; the cost is the LaMotte meter or strips that feed them. Pool Calc works with the kit you already have and is free for one pool.

Any kit, typed in once

If you own a Spin Touch, WaterLink's Bluetooth link saves typing, and that's a real advantage. If you use a drop kit, strips from any brand, or a meter from another maker, Pool Calc takes the results on one screen with a number pad and "Same as last" for slow readings like CYA and calcium.

Past five pools

WaterLink Home lists up to 5 bodies of water. Pool Calc Plus also covers 5, and Pool Calc Pro covers unlimited pools with client cards, a route in your own order, a one-screen stop and a PDF report with your logo, all on the phone.

No account to keep your log

WaterLink Home asks you to create a free account. Pool Calc doesn't have accounts: your log lives on your phone and backs up to your own iCloud.

What WaterLink Users Complain About

Paraphrased from public reviews. Each one links to where it was posted and gives the month it was written.

  • Readings lost mid-test. A July 2025 WaterLink Home reviewer said the app sometimes switched pages or timed out during testing and lost readings, and asked for a way to pause and resume (App Store review, July 2025).

Pool Calc approach: test entry is saved as a draft on every change and restored if the app is closed. Close saves the test, with Undo.

  • Slow Bluetooth after an update. A WaterLink Home reviewer reported "significant lag in Bluetooth connection" to their ColorQ 2x after an update (App Store review, June 2026). LaMotte replied asking for a bug report.

Pool Calc approach: no pairing step. That means no Bluetooth convenience either: you type the numbers.

  • Pro app: camera blocked during a job, and login loops. WaterLink Solutions PRO reviewers say a pop-up stops them reading a strip while in a job, and that the app got stuck trying to log in (App Store reviews, April 2026).

Pool Calc approach: no login, and the stop screen holds readings, doses, tasks, photos and notes on one screen.

  • You own a LaMotte Spin Touch, ColorQ or Pulse and want results sent to the app over Bluetooth.
  • Your pool store or service pro uses WaterLink Solutions PRO and you want to link to them with Homelinks.
  • You test an aquarium as well as a pool or spa.
  • You work for a commercial operation already set up on WaterLink Solutions PRO.

Questions people ask

What app does the LaMotte Spin Touch use?

LaMotte's WaterLink Home app lists LaMotte Spin among its supported devices, and its version notes mention Spin Touch. For professionals, WaterLink Solutions PRO names WaterLink Spin Touch with Bluetooth transfer. Both were free on the App Store on 28 October 2026.

Can Pool Calc read my Spin Touch over Bluetooth?

No. Pool Calc doesn't connect to meters. You type the meter's results into one screen, which takes a few seconds, and Pool Calc gives the dose plan.

Is there an alternative to WaterLink for more than 5 pools?

WaterLink Home lists up to 5 bodies of water. Pool Calc Pro covers unlimited pools for $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year, with clients, a route and service reports, on the App Store at launch.
